Awesome Pool Day at Sleep Away!

We had a wonderful final full day of sleep away camp! After some delicious omelets for breakfast, the one-week campers who chose to do an extra horseback ride headed out to the stables, while the remaining campers headed to their cabins and got ready for our pool day! After sunscreening and filling up our water bottles, we headed down to Eldo Pool for some fun in the sun! Campers enjoyed playing in the pool, going off the diving board, and going down the slide. They also enjoyed watching their counselors get into the pool!

When the horseback riders joined us after their ride, we enjoyed a yummy lunch at the pool–it was fun to eat in our cabin groups! After lunch, we re-sunscreened and filled up our water bottles again, and then headed back up to the pool deck for some more splashing around. Campers played cards, did funky dives and jumps, and played shark attack with the counselors. They also enjoyed sunbathing on the nice warm deck! After a fun day at the pool, we all headed back to camp for a well-deserved rest hour. It was nice to relax in our cabins after playing hard at the pool all day!

After rest hour, campers enjoyed some yummy popcorn for snack, and then had free time on the field and in the lodge. Campers made one last lanyard, enjoyed playing some soccer, and had fun chatting with their friends. Then, we headed in for a great mac and cheese dinner! After dinner, campers returned to their cabins to put on warm clothes, and then headed down to the ampitheater for our closing ceremony. We sang songs, made and ate some s’mores (Yum!) and did the camp key log ceremony. During the ceremony, each camper had the chance to recognize another person at camp who really made a difference to them during their time at camp. It was great to hear how everyone has made such good friends at camp! At the end of the ceremony, we sang our closing song as a camp, and then headed back to our cabins for a cabin group candlelight ceremony and lights out. It’s been a fantastic summer at sleep away camp, and we look forward to seeing the parents tomorrow!

2nd Monday at Sleep Away!

We had a great second Monday at sleep away camp! We began our day with some yummy breakfast, and then headed back to our cabins to get ready for the day. After sunscreening and filling up water bottles, we met at the camp field for some energetic songs and games to get all woken up! Then, the one-week campers headed over to the meeting hall to decorate their water bottles and do some fun teambuilding activities, including Magic Hoop and Flip the Tarp, while the two-week campers headed out on their Adventure Tracks! The backpackers headed out of camp, while the hikers learned how to read both a compass and a map. Meanwhile, the climbers climbed on Wally–some did it blindfolded!–and learned about climbing knots. We all met again for lunch, which was delicious grilled cheese and tomato soup.

After lunch, everyone headed back to their cabins for a nice relaxing rest hour. It’s nice to have that quiet hour in the middle of the day! Then, the one-week campers had a chance to do some Choice Activities. Several chose to sketch and do artwork with Counselors Kyra and Catie, while others worked with Counselor Dana on a camp service project. With our service projects, we really enjoy leaving camp better than we found it! Meanwhile, the two-week campers continued their Adventure Tracks: the climbers scouted bouldering sites around camp and learned about belaying, while the hikers explored the trails around camp, learned about scrambling and going down scree, and even did some “off-road” hiking!

At 4:30, we all came together for some great popcorn for snack and some nice chill free time. Campers enjoyed playing games in the lodge, playing volleyball and tetherball outside, and hanging out and talking with each other and with the counselors. After free time, we all washed our hands and headed into dinner, which was barbeque chicken! Yum! After filling our stomaches, we headed back to the cabins to put on some warm clothes, and then had our first ever AO Camps Carnival! It was great fun–all of the counselors dressed up in costumes, and acted as the carnies 🙂 We had a ring toss, a bean bag toss, a softball challenge (knock the cans off the bin with a softball!), a ping-pong challenge (get the ping-pong ball into one of the cups of water!), a hula hoop challenge (get the hula hoop around the two-liter water bottle!), and a volleyball challenge (toss the volleyball into the bucket!). We also had face painting and the opportunity to make some awesome paper crowns. It was tons of fun!

After carnival, we sang our end-of-day song, and headed back to the cabins to brush teeth and get ready for bed. Tomorrow’s another big day at sleep away camp!

Second Sunday at Sleep Away!

We had a fun Sunday here at sleep away camp! We began with a lazy breakfast–it was fun to sleep in for an hour, and then to see Director Tommy cook the camper’s breakfast orders! Campers could choose their omelet ingredients, and whether they wanted plain or fruit pancakes. It was good fun! After breakfast, we did our big camp clean; campers cleaned their cabins, and then helped clean the lodge, meeting hall, and bathhouse. Everyone helped, so it went really quickly! After making camp shine, we had time to play an awesome game of Gold Rush–the campers tried to find the missing gold and bring it back to the safe point, all while avoiding the greedy Gold Robbers, who tried to tag the campers and take away their gold. It was exciting! Eventually, the campers worked together to defeat the robbers and win the day.

After Gold Rush, we all headed to lunch, where we had some yummy enchiladas. We timed it perfectly; it rained during lunch, and then cleared up so that we could head back to our cabins for rest hour! Several campers took naps; all that running around for Gold Rush was tiring! After rest hour, campers had another chance to do choice activities–some chose to do archery, while others chose to play frisbee golf or make candles. The frisbee golf course was fun, but challenging!

Meanwhile, our one-week campers arrived, and had a chance to unpack and take a tour of the camp with their counselors. Then, at 4:30, everyone met at the camp field for some snack and free time. The campers enjoyed having individual orders of gorp for snack! After snack, the one-week campers continued on their tour and played name games to get to know each other, while the two-week campers enjoyed talking with each other, playing the guitar, and doing lanyards.

After free play, we all headed down to dinner, where we ate some yummy pasta. Everyone ended up with very full stomaches! After dinner, we all put on some warm clothes and then headed down to the amphitheater for our middle ceremony. We sang songs, welcomed the one-week campers, played some name games, talked about the upcoming week, and generally had a lot of fun! After the campfire, everyone headed back to their cabins, where they brushed their teeth, put on their pjs, and hopped into bed! Tomorrow’s going to be a fun-filled day!

Kites and Archery at Sleep Away Camp!

We had a fun Saturday at sleep away camp! We began our day with some delicious granola, yogurt, and fruit for breakfast, and then headed back to our cabins to get ready for the day. After filling water bottles and applying sunscreen, we hopped onto the camp bus and headed to Crescent Meadow for the morning, where campers hiked around and made awesome kites. It was fun to see the kites fly really high!

After our morning, we had an al fresco lunch at camp–cabin groups got to take bag lunches and eat anywhere they wanted! Groups enjoyed eating in and around the forts they’d built earlier in the week. After lunch, everyone headed back to their cabins for rest hour–it’s nice to take an hour in the middle of the day to relax! After rest hour, campers had choice activities; they could choose to do archery, go fishing, or make candles! Several archers hit the bulls eye, and the candle-makers decided to add a vanilla scent to their candles!

After our choice activities, campers had a chance to order their own gorp for lunch–it was fun to see Director Tommy make each camper’s individual mix! Then, the campers had some free time; they enjoyed hanging out on the camp field and in the lodge–several got involved in an intense game of Uno! Then, everyone washed their hands and headed to Crestone Needle for a yummy dinner. After dinner, we all headed back to the meeting hall, where we had an evening at the movies! The campers really enjoyed watching Wall-E, although some fell asleep during it. 🙂 Then, everyone headed back to their cabins for lights out!

Friday fun at Sleep Away Camp!

We had an adventure-filled day at sleep away camp! We began our day with some delicious breakfast burritos, after which we headed back to our cabins to get ready for the day. We met on the field for some energetic songs and an action-packed game of Blog Tag! After getting energized, the two-week campers headed out to our camp lake for a morning of kayaking and canoeing  while the one-week campers headed back to their cabins to pack. We found every stray sock and water bottle! After packing and having cabin inspection, the one-week campers received their camp t-shirts and had a chance for some last few minutes of free time before lunch. Meanwhile, the two-week campers learned about bracing in kayaks, and about different paddle strokes in canoes.

We had make your own sandwiches for lunch–campers had a good time piling on the cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and more! Then, the one-week campers headed over to the lodge to be picked up, while the two-week campers said “goodbye!” and headed back to their cabins for rest hour. In the afternoon, despite some drizzle from the skies, the two-week campers kayaked and canoed one last time. Even though it rained off and on, campers enjoyed doing one last wet exit, playing Irish basketball, and racing through games of sharks and minnows. Then, we all hopped into warm showers to warm up!

After getting nice and toasty warm, we had some delicious gorp for snack and had our free time. Campers played board games in the lodge, made lanyards, and enjoyed chatting with each other–and the returning backpackers!–until dinner, which was some great lasagna! A nice hot meal was excellent, as the day turned a bit chilly towards the end. Our campers’ spirits remain undaunted, however–we played a rousing few rounds of Bingo! for our evening program, and everyone was very involved. There were shouts of joy and groans at the various numbers called, and lots of heckling of the number caller. 🙂 It was great fun! Then, we headed back to our cabins to get some rest–tomorrow’s another big day!

Tie-Dye, Kayaking, and More at Sleep Away!

We had a fun Thursday at sleep away camp! We began our morning with some delicious french toast, then headed back to our cabins to get ready for the day. Then, we met at the field for some songs and games to get up and moving! After a rousing game of Giants, Wizards, Elves, the one-week campers began their choice activities–some went horseback riding, while others fished with Counselor Ben at the lake and climbed with Counselor Dana on Wally (our 26-foot climbing wall). Meanwhile, the backpackers headed out on their trip, while the remaining two-week campers created some beautiful tie-dye bandanas (parents, please wash those separately the first time!), and then helped to landscape our playing field. The campers are taking great pride in leaving camp better than they found it!

We had some yummy sloppy joes for lunch, and then headed back to our cabins for rest hour. After chilling out for an hour, the one-week campers went swimming in our camp lake, and also had the opportunity to make lanyards and sponge bugs. The two-week campers hopped in their kayaks and canoes and learned about boating from Counselors Nate, Annie, and Dennis! Everyone successfully completed their wet exit, and they had tons of fun playing sharks and minnows, and just cruising around the lake.

After swimming, kayaking, and canoeing, everyone took a quick shower to get nice and toasty warm, and then we had some popcorn for snack before free time. During free time, campers played board games, kicked around a soccer ball, played four square, and enjoyed each other’s company. Then, we headed to dinner, and filled up on some great mac n’ cheese! After dinner, campers headed back to their cabins to change into warm clothes, and then headed out on a night hike. It was fun to walk around when the sun was setting and we could see some lovely alpine glow! We closed our day with a campfire at the fire ring, and some super-yummy s’mores! All of the campers enjoyed roasting and eating their marshmallows. Delicious! Then, campers headed back to their cabins to for lights out. It was a wonderful day, and we’re excited for tomorrow!

Wednesday at Sleep Away!

We had a really fun first Wednesday at sleep away camp! We began our day with some yummy biscuits and gravy, and then headed off to our activities! The two week campers did some fun horseback riding through the Indian Peaks–we saw some great views, and enjoyed meeting different horses!–while the one week campers did archery, fished, and climbed. The campers really enjoyed getting better at archery and fishing; they learned that if you practice, you improve!

We had some good chicken nuggets for lunch, and then relaxed for rest hour. Some campers even took a nap! After rest hour, the two week campers headed off to their adventure track activities, backpacking and kayaking, while the one week campers did choice activities. The kayakers practiced their wet exits–the lake was a little chilly, but everyone did a great job!–while the backpackers learned all about how to properly pack a big backpack. Meanwhile, the one week campers enjoyed walking on our camp slackline (with a shoulder assist from another camper), playing “off-road” croquet, doing leatherworking, and landscaping our traffic circle to make it look gorgeous!

We had some yummy popcorn for snack, and then the campers had a chance to chill out during free time. Some campers played tetherball, while others enjoyed making bug houses, talking, and playing volleyball. We had some yummy dinner, and then put on our warm clothes for evening program. We played Minute to Win It! It was so fun–campers got a chance to try their hand at different tasks, including Face the Cookie and Hoop the Can. It was a great time! Then, we sang our closing song and headed back to our cabins for lights out. What a fun day!

Horseback Riding, Hiking, and More!

We had a great second full day of sleep away camp–we started out our morning with some yummy omelets for breakfast! After putting on sunscreen and getting ready for the day, the one-week campers headed out for a beautiful horseback ride through the mountains, while the two-week campers signed up for their adventure tracks and headed out on a hike. The one-week campers enjoyed learning about horses and the mountains from the wranglers, while the two-week campers tromped all around the hiking trails at camp!

After a fun taco lunch, everyone headed back to their cabins for rest hour. It’s nice to have a break in the middle of the day! Then, we all met a the meeting hall. Our planned afternoon activity got rained out, but everyone was flexible, and we played some really fun games in the meeting hall instead! We played Poison Frog, Shinball, the Gaze Game, and more! The weather cleared up in time to have some popcorn for snack outside, as well as free time. Campers enjoyed hanging out, playing frisbee and tetherball, and an impromptu game of touch football!

We enjoyed a pizza buffet for dinner-yum!-and then had a chance to create cabin ‘Codes of Living’ and awesome cabin flags! Campers got the chance to create and sign a code of living for their cabin, and then got to work on cabin flags to represent their cabin at camp. We closed our day with some quieter evening songs, and then headed back to our cabins for lights out. Tomorrow is riding for the two-week campers and archery for the one-week campers; it’ll be another great day!

Fun Full First Day at Sleep Away Camp!

We had an awesome first day of sleep away camp! We began our day with some delicious pancakes for breakfast, then headed back to our cabins to put on sunscreen and do “camp tidy” before meeting at the camp field to sing some morning songs. We began with a camp classic, Tarzan, and also did Fred the Moose and the Beaver Song. Then, we played a great game of Ship-Island; ask your campers how to play! After getting all warmed up, cabin groups had a chance to participate in different teambuilding activities, as well as make some great camp water bottles. Campers lowered a ‘magic’ hoop to the ground, walked on our camp skis, built structures with giant Toobeez, and more! While teambuilding, we drank lots of water from our brand new water bottles!

We had some wonderful grilled cheese for lunch, and then headed back to our cabins for a nice quiet rest hour. After relaxing for an hour, we started our Choice activities rotation. Campers could choose to learn juggling, create yarn art, sketch a piece of nature, participate in a camp service project, or play lawn games like bocce, croquet, and slacklining! We had a great time, and when it rained a bit, we just moved the fun indoors! After our Choice activities, we had some popcorn for snack, and headed back to the camp field for free play. Campers had the chance to relax and organize their own games–some chose to make bug houses, while others played soccer, volleyball, and more!

At dinner, we had some great barbecued chicken and corn–it was yummy! Then, we headed back to our cabins to change into some warm clothes for our evening program. For our evening program, we had a Dutch Auction; cabin groups, using costumes, made up and performed skits about different items that Program Director Jen called out. We saw skits about human-sized frisbees, and about a new Disney/Pixar film! We all had a great time being silly and fun. We closed our day with some quieter evening songs, including Country Roads, and then headed back to our cabins for lights out.

Tomorrow, we’ve got lots of fun planned, including Horseback Riding, Hiking, Gold Rush, and more!
